Writing

Here are just a few of my compositions from my freshman english class that stood out to me in one way or another.  I hope you enjoy the pieces.

"I Believe in Dinosaurs"

This assignment was inspired by the long standing NPR This I Believe radio segment.  The goal of this assignment was ultimately to express a fundamental belief of ours in a audibly pleasing manner.  At first I struggled to think of a topic to write about, but ultimately I settled upon expressing my view of existence through the awe-struck eyes of a toddler first learning about the wonders of the dinosaurs.  I hope you'll join me in a walk through the Smithsonian of existential proportions in "I Believe in Dinosaurs."

Issue Brief

In this assignment, we employed rhetorical strategies to promote a course of action for a broad, impending issue.  I chose to investigate the actions that a country might take to counteract unemployment that will accompany automation in the future.  This is a topic that far too often gets swept under the rug either because people don't know about it, or they don't want to do anything about it.  Automation truly is one of the largest threats to future prosperity, and I hope that this issue brief can provide some insight as to the true magnitude of the threat it poses.

Automation and You

This is an infographic that I made to accompany the issue brief above.  I enjoyed making this mainly because the medium is fun to interact with and can be highly informative.  I hope that this graphic is as enjoyable to look at as it was to make.

Evolution Paradigm Shift Essay

An intriguing assignment from the first semester of English has to be the paradigm shift essay.  The utimate goal was to identify and investigate a major paradigm that has shifted in human culture.  As I have ample interest in science, I decided to research and report on the shift to the modern understanding of evolution and the forces working against the acceptance of the theory in American society.  In the essay, I focus on the scientific paradigm change, and follow this with the gradual societal shift that is still occurring.  I follow the growht of secular schooling through the lense of court rulings that have shifted the fabric of the education system.  I hope you enjoy this shift as much as I did.
